5 Tips From Your Dentist

Want a healthier smile? Small, daily habits can pay off big time when it comes to helping you achieve the smile of your dreams. Our very own Dr. Gore rounded up his five best tips for a beautiful, healthy smile. Let’s dive in!

Tip #1: Floss before you brush your teeth.

Flossing moves the plaque from in between your teeth and into areas where you can then brush it off. If you brush first and then floss, there is a good chance that plaque could sit on your teeth overnight. Also, when you are flossing, make sure to guide the floss between your teeth and never “snap” it in your gums. Do not forget to floss the backside of the last teeth in your mouth!

Tip #2: Brush your teeth after you’ve had breakfast.

While you can absolutely brush your teeth right after you wake up, it is really important to brush them after you have had breakfast. This will help prevent food from sitting on your teeth all day long, which could cause bad breath, cavities, and gingivitis. We recommend bringing a travel size toothbrush and toothpaste with you to work so you can brush after every meal.

Tip #3: Brush as directed and rinse with Listerine Healthy White.

After you have flossed and brushed with your normal toothpaste, rinse with Listerine Healthy White to help prevent cavities, protect against gingivitis and whiten your teeth all at the same time. Remember that gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease, and can still be reversed at this point if promptly corrected. Your dentist here at Midlothian Dental Center can clear out the infection with a professional cleaning.

Tip #4: Poor oral healthcare can lead to other inflammatory diseases, so take care of your teeth!

While we have a number of treatments and cosmetic fixes for dental problems, it is much easier (and cheaper!) to take care of your own teeth and ensure they stay in optimal health. Poor dental care can actually lead to cardiovascular disease and strokes. Bacteria can travel from your mouth to other parts of your body, specifically the heart by way of your bloodstream. According to the Colgate website, if the bacteria reaches the heart, it can attach to any damaged areas and cause inflammation.

If you show any of the warning signs for gingivitis or gum disease (periodontitis), please make an appointment to see your dentist as soon as possible. The warning signs include:

  • Red, swollen gums that are sore to the touch
  • Gums that bleed when you eat, brush or floss
  • Signs of infection in the mouth such as pus
  • Gums that look like they are pulling away from the teeth
  • Consistent bad breath
  • Teeth that feel loose

Tip #5: If you have retainers, wear them forever!

Straight teeth are healthy teeth. When your teeth are crowded they are more difficult to keep clean. Therefore, you are more likely to get cavities and/or gum disease. You spent all this time (and money) getting your teeth beautiful and straight—don’t let it go to waste. Wear your retainers! If you need replacements, tell your dentist as soon as possible so they can go about the process of getting you a new set.
