Best New Year's Resolutions to Improve Your Dental Health in 2021

Kick-off the New Year with an accomplishment you can feel great about by starting with your oral health! Today we’re sharing 5 tips for putting your best smile forward in 2021. And when it’s time to come in for a checkup, you can feel confident in knowing that our entire staff is focused on personalizing your dental care experience and providing best-in-class dental care.

Tip #1 - Floss Each and Every Day

Flossing between your teeth prevents cavities and gum disease. Flossing also helps remove a sticky film known as plaque. If you don’t floss between your teeth each day, the plaque has the opportunity to build up and release an acid that has the potential to eat away the outer coating of your teeth.

Tip #2 - Replace Your Toothbrush Every 3 Months

Speaking of New Year’s resolutions, the ADA recommends changing your toothbrush every 3-4 months (or whenever the bristles start to fray). Put a reminder in your phone to pick up a new toothbrush with the ADA Seal of Acceptance with every new season.

Tip #3 - Switch To Sugar-Free Gum

While having fresh breath might not be a traditional New Year’s resolution, switching to sugar-free gum should be! The benefits include helping to prevent cavities, as well as increased saliva production. For example, if you chew a piece of sugar-free gum after you eat, the increase in saliva will help wash away any acids left over from food.

Tip #4 - Schedule A Dental Check-Up

Scheduling at least two dental checkups and cleanings with your dentist each year is crucial to maintaining your oral health. Your dentist will be able to see what you can’t and recommend treatment if you’re experiencing any issues.

Tip #5 - Replace Your Old Retainer

If you use anything daily, chances are there will come a time when it needs to be replaced. This absolutely applies to your retainer. If your retainer is damaged, showing signs of aging (calcium deposits, discoloration, or unpleasant odors), or if your teeth have shifted, it may be time to replace your retainer.Get ahead of the game and schedule your dental checkups for 2021 now by giving us a call at (804) 794-4588.
